Did you know?
my darling students hate the Dalai Lama with a passion?
There are no text books with his picture, or else the students would rip it out.
They say, "We no like Dalai because he cause China too many problems."
"He old, silly man."
"He want war. China want peace."
"He make everybody hate China. He say bad thing. We no like Dalai."

This is what my students are taught, and everyone has the same opinion.
Today in the NY Times is an article are the ongoing conflict between China and Tibet. The Dalai Lama still believes Tibet will gain autonomy from China, and he wants to have an "ethnic cleansing of Han Chinese" who now live in Tibet.
This to me is disturbing coming from a man who is world-renowned for his talks on peace.
From what I know about China, the Chinese will never allow Tibet to gain autonomy, and if there is an "ethnic cleansing" of Han Chinese, I'm afraid the Tibetans will pay for it. I feel sorry for Tibet, and their lost country and I wish the people could still practice their religion the way they want to.
China is a nation with over 1.3 billion people, and the portion of land that was "stolen" or "liberated" (depending on who you talk you) is so large and compromises such a bulk of China that the Chinese will do whatever is necessary to keep the Tibetans in order. I think the Tibetans are fighting a losing battle. Maybe the best thing for them to do now is to re-locate to India where the people are open and empathetic to a myraid of belief systems and traditions.

you'd better don't talk religion issuses in Classroom.
"ethnic cleansing of Chinese from Tibet" is not what he said. That's mistranslation.
Who thaught tiny Estonia will be independent from Russia? They passed the law that persons and their decendants who were living in Estonia before 1940 can apply for citizenship. This allows Estonians to make up majority in the country.
That's what Tibet would do if it becomes independent.
I actually believe that Tibet will be independent.
In the West, there is overestimatement or overrating about Chinese power.
