upon preparing for a trip

Ned and I,

and 5 of our American friends from the other side of town are taking a wayyyy AM train to Harbin, China tomorrow.

The train leaves at 3:59am. So precise. Why not 4am?

We're only staying two nights in Harbin, but the journey is 12 hours one way by train, so it really is a long journey.

Ned and I have sleeper tickets, so we can say night night... when the train starts rolling. Our friends opted out for the cheap sitter/stander tickets, which means they may or may not get a seat. This also means lots of Chinese coughing, eating sunflower seeds and spitting around you. I at least hope our friends can find a seat.

One of my favorite activities of all time is preparing for a trip.

I took a long nap this afternoon to energize myself for my stay-up tonight. I'm not going to bed, if I have to wake up at 2:30am to find a taxi.

I've packed my shoulder bag with my warmest clothes. Harbin is probably the coldest weather I'll experience here in China. We're traveling up there for the Ice Sculpture festival, and many of the statues are illuminated at night so we'll be out and about when it's cold.

My warm clothes include Doc Marten boots, hiking socks, thick thick thick long underwear with felt inside, long wool toggle button sweater, wool beanie, and calf long down jacket. oh the joys of layers.

Preparations include finishing my current novel, so I can take a new one with me, charging my Ipod, charging my camera battery, painting my nails bright red, plucking my eye brows, cooking rice, boiling dumplings, boiling eggs, buying fruit and nuts and icky sausages (for Ned) to pack with us to eat on the 12 hour train.

Happy trails!

do I have old lady hands?

Let's hope everything goes well. Ned just booked a hotel. Hurray!

Is it true that there they see number 4 as an "unlucky" number!? I think is the death number for they!
